Where lessons take place

Sarah teaches from her home in Sittingbourne, at students’ homes, and peripatetically in schools. She currently teaches privately at Borden Grammar School and Highsted Grammar School, and is also open to teaching at other schools where private lessons are permitted.

As a general guide, Sarah covers Sittingbourne and surrounding areas within roughly a 15-mile radius of her home. She may be willing to travel further where there are enough lessons to make the journey practical.

Who lessons are for

Sarah teaches children aged 7 and above, teenagers and adults, with lessons tailored to the individual student. She welcomes complete beginners, more experienced players, and adults returning to the piano after time away.

Whether the goal is to play for enjoyment, build confidence, work towards exams, or strengthen school music skills, lessons are adapted to suit the student’s age, level and aims.

What happens in the first lesson

The first lesson is used to get a clear feel for the student’s current level, confidence and interests. Sarah will usually ask a few questions and, where appropriate, invite the student to play something they already know or have recently learned.

From there, she can recommend a suitable lesson length and help shape a sensible plan moving forward. Goals are led by the student or their parent or guardian, and where exams are being considered Sarah can advise whether ABRSM or Trinity is likely to be the better fit. She will only enter students for exams when she feels they are genuinely ready.

Choosing the right lesson length

As a general guide, younger children often benefit most from 30-minute lessons, as this is usually the best fit for attention span and concentration. Older students and adults may benefit from 45 or 60 minute lessons, depending on their level, goals and how much they want to cover each week.

Sarah will always recommend the lesson length she feels is most suitable, but this can be adjusted over time as the student develops.
